 Extra Care Housing

Extra Care schemes are affordable housing for people 55+ with varying levels of care needs. The schemes are an alternative to residential care.  They are a great option for older people who wish to live independently in a safe environment.  

Benefits to living in an Extra Care Scheme:

  • Access to 24/7 emergency support from an on-site care team
  • Option to use the onsite CQC registered care provider or use existing care provider
  • Own one or two-bedroom apartment, which can be adapted as needed  
  • All apartments have a wet floor shower room and there is access to an assisted bathing suite
  • Unfurnished apartments with accessible features including:
    • eye level side opening ovens
    • pull out larder units to assist with reduced mobility
    • designs for residents with visual impairments
  • Extensive landscaped gardens and a range of communal spaces for activities
  • Onsite restaurant providing healthy meals, including a cafe area open to the public
  •  Onsite hair salon and other public areas allowing interaction with the local community

Who can live in an Extra Care Scheme?

To live in an Extra Care Scheme, you must meet all the criteria below:

  • Age55+
  • Have housing and care needs usually associated with, but not restricted to, older people
  • Leeds must be your normal place of residency, and/ or you have a close family association in Leeds
  • Have demonstrable care and support needs and/or housing that is unsuitable to meet your health and social care needs, this may include:                                  
  • Age-related frailty 
  • Physical/mental health issues
  • Multiple health problems
  • Sensory impairment
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Safety and security

If you don’t have a Social Worker or haven’t been assessed by the Adult Social Care team, you will need to have this done before applying.
